On March 27, 2017, the North Carolina Attorney General (AG) issued a press release announcing that a settlement with a student loan company that allegedly operated a “student loan debt relief scheme.”
According to the press release, Student Loan Group, a private student loan company located in North Carolina, falsely promised to reduce a borrower’s student loan debt but instead charged illegal upfront fees and failed to deliver on its promises.
On March 9, 2017, the North Carolina Attorney General (AG) issued a press release announcing that a North Carolina Superior Court had issued a ruling against three debt relief companies. The court permanently banning the companies from advertising or performing any debt relief services, legal services or any related services in North Carolina and entered final judgments and assessed civil penalties.
On March 7, 2017, the FTC issued a press release announcing that it had entered into a stipulated order with a debt relief company that allegedly misled consumers and charged illegal advance fees. Under the terms of the order, the United Debt Counselors, LLC will be prohibited from making misleading claims about its debt relief services.
